Keep up to date on what is going on at the Oak Lawn Park District!• Sand Volleyball Leagues - Team registration is under way for the Oak Lawn Park District’s Men’s, Women’s and Co-Rec sand volleyball leagues. Fee per team is $325. Teams will participate in round robin play with game times varying each week. League play begins Wednesday, May 19 for the Competitive Co-Rec League; Thursday May 20 and Friday May 21 for the Co-Rec Recreational League; Monday, May 24 for the Men’s League and Tuesday, May 25 for the Women’s League. • TRIP: Chicago History Museum – On Tuesday, May 25 the Oak Lawn Park District is hosting a trip to the Chicago History Museum. Stroll through the galleries at you own pace on a self-guided tour. Experience the city’s greatest triumphs and trials in the Museum’s permanent exhibition, Chicago: Crossroads of America. Get a birds eye view of Chicago’s transformation in the Imagining Chicago Diorama Hall. The Chicago History Dioramas, created in 1932. Also on display is President Lincoln’s deathbed. Elevated car Number 1, Chicago’s first “L” train built in 1892 greets you on arrival. A Box lunch is included. The Motorcoach will depart the Oak View Center at 9:30 am and return at 3:30 pm. • TRIP: Ten Chimneys – On Tuesday, June 8 the Oak Lawn Park District will travel to the Ten Chimneys Estate - home of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the most revered acting team in American theatre history. The day will begin with a tour of a mystery location. After lunch we will head to Ten Chimneys for a tour of the estate. The estate’s décor and collections are intact and unchanged since the Lunts assembled them in the 30's and 40's. Full estate tour includes main house, studio, cottage and gardens. The Motorcoach will depart the Community Pavilion at 7 am and return at 6 pm. Fee is $110 for Oak Lawn residents and $120 for non-residents. • Judo - The Oak Lawn Park District’s Summer Judo session will begin on Saturday, May 29 at the Menard Center, 90th St. & Menard Ave. Learn the basic Judo techniques of proper falling, throwing and pinning. Advanced students will learn strangle holds and arm locks. Judo is based on the philosophy of Minimum Effort - Maximum Efficiency in which you turn opponents strengths against him, therefore defeating him in the most efficient manner. This class is designed to learn Judo skills, discipline, respect, balance and coordination for sport or for self-defense. This program is open to individuals 4 years and older. Participants must wear Judo Gi (uniform) or sweatpants and sweatshirt. The beginner level classes will be held from 10 – 11 am and the intermediate/advanced level classes will be geld from 11 am – 12 pm. Fee for this program is $65 for Oak Lawn residents and $79 non-residents.
• Matsumura Shorin-Ryu Karate - The Oak Lawn Park District’s Summer Matsumura Shorin-Ryu Karate session will begin on Thursday, June 3. Classes are held at the Menard Center, 90th St. & Menard Ave., from 7:45 – 8:45 pm. Matsumura Shorin-Ryu Karate is one of the oldest systems of karate. Participants will learn the history of the system as well as its fighting and self-defense applications. A uniform is required for promotion to higher belt colors. This program is open to individuals 13 years and older. Fee for this program is $55 for Oak Lawn residents and $69 non-residents.
• Japanese Swordsmanship - The Oak Lawn Park District’s Summer Japanese Swordsmanship session will begin on Thursday, June 3. Classes are held at the Menard Center, 90th St. & Menard Ave., from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. This course covers the modern day version of actual techniques used by samurai warriors. Known as “iaido,” it is translated as drawing and cutting with a single stroke of the blade. A uniform and practice sword will be required for promotions. Wooden swords will be available for use. This program is open to individuals 13 years and older. Fee for this program is $50 for Oak Lawn residents and $62 non-residents.
• Tai Chi - The Oak Lawn Park District is offering another session of Tai Chi beginning Monday, July 12 and continuing through August 30. Classes will be held Monday evenings from 7 - 8:00 pm at the Oak View Center (4625 W. 110th). Tai Chi combines proper breathing techniques with circular movements that are graceful and similar to dance. The class does not just go through the motions: participants will be worked with one-on-one and posture may be corrected physically. This program is open to individuals 18 years and older. • Family & Friends CPR Course – The Oak Lawn Park District is offering a Family & Friends CPR Course on Monday, June 14 from 6:30 -8:30 pm at he Community Pavilion (9401 S. Oak Park Av.). This American Heart Association’s Family & Friends CPR course is for everyone from schoolchildren to older family members, caregivers and other adults who care for people at risk of sudden cardiac death. This course focuses on CPR and response to choking and helps participants: recognize signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking in adults, children and infants. This is not a certification course but will prepare you to act in an emergency especially with loved ones. Participants will receive Family and Friends CPR book. • Community CPR/Heartsaver First Aid/CPR – The Oak Lawn Park District is offering a Community CPR/Heartsaver First Aid/CPR Course on Thursday, June 17 from 5-9 pm at he Community Pavilion (9401 S. Oak Park Av.). This course is designed for those non-professional healthcare providers who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency on the job. This course teaches you how to recognize an emergency. Adult, Child and infant CPR techniques are taught in addition to rescue techniques for choking victims. AED use will also be covered. Completion of this course gives a 2-year certification in accordance with the American Heart Associations guidelines. All participants will be issued a Heartsaver Student Workbook and a certification card. Fee for this course is $49 for Oak Lawn residents and $65 non-residents. • Summer Day Camps - Register NOW for the Oak Lawn Park District’s Summer Day Camps. First session begins June 14th and the second session begins July 12th. Extended camp is available for both sessions. Camps are open to those 3 years of age through 5th grade at several convenient locations. Other camps offered this summer: Sports Camp, Horseback Riding, Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Dance, British Sports and Special Recreation. • Summer Volleyball Camps - The Oak Lawn Park District is offering Summer Volleyball Camps for kids entering kindergarten through 10th. The camps will begin Monday, June 14 and run through Thursday, June 17. Classes will be held at the sand volleyball courts behind the Pavilion (9401 S. Oak Park Ave.). Fee for Kindergarten through 2nd grade is $68 for Oak Lawn residents and $78 for non-residents. Fee for 3rd -5th grade is $79 for Oak Lawn residents and $89 for non-residents. • EVP Spiking 101 Beach Camp - The Oak Lawn Park District is offering an EVP Spiking 101 Beach Volleyball Camp Monday, June 14 through Thursday, June 17. The camp will meet at the sand volleyball courts behind the Pavilion (9401 S. Oak Park Ave.) from 1 – 2:30 pm. This camp is for players who wish to learn proper arm swing, footwork and development of jumping skills. The knowledge of the instructors will give the participants a head start on their skills in preparation for the next upcoming volleyball season. • Preschool Registration – It is not too early to register for the Oak Lawn Park District’s 2010/2011 preschool programs. The park district offers affordable, quality preschool classes for 3- to 5-year-olds. The preschool programs—Learn As You Grow I, Learn As You Grow II, Play School and Prep School—are offered at the Oak View Center (4625 W. 110th St.) and the Little White Building in Lake Shore Park (96th Street and East Shore Drive) and are taught by qualified instructors. Fee for preschool programs for 3 year olds is $670 Oak Lawn residents and $752 for non-residents. Fee for preschool programs for 4 year olds is $1000 Oak Lawn residents and $1124 for non-residents. • Kids Grow – Fun with Gardening - The Oak Lawn Park District is offering a new gardening program for kids age 6-12. Kids Grow was developed so that kids can reconnect with nature by learning and having fun with gardening. Participants will learn to start and maintain their own flowering gardens. Crafts and other fun activities will also be a part of this program! Gardening gloves are strongly recommended. The program runs June 15 – August 19, meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 – 11:30 am at Memorial Park. Fee for this class is $90 for Oak Lawn residents and $100 for non-residents. • Before & After School With FLASH – FLASH, Fun & Learning After School Hours - Register now for the 2010/2011 school year. The Oak Lawn Park District has partnered up with School District 123 for the 2nd year and is expanding to all 5 elementary schools, Covington, Hannum, Hometown, Kolmar, & Sward. The park district has also partnered up with School District 122 and their 4 elementary schools, Columbus Manor, Harnew, Kolb, & Lieb to provide FLASH for the 2010/2011 school year. • Visit the Indoor Playground at the Community Pavilion - If you have to stay inside, than play inside!
The Oak Lawn Park District’s indoor playground will be available for use any time the Community Pavilion (9401 S. Oak park Ave.) is open for business. Open gym fees apply and a parent or guardian must be present with their child or children at all times. The indoor playground is a non-park district staff supervised area.
The indoor playground is also now available to rent for parties. It can be rented alone or with a court to expand your party. Parties must be booked at least two weeks in advance. Call 708-857-2420 for more information about daily fees and party package prices.
• Massage Therapy at the Community Pavilion - Sandra Coffey is available by appointment only. Massage therapy is used to reduce stress, increase circulation and detoxify overexerted muscles. Open to men and women. A parent or guardian must accompany children under age 12. There is a 24-hour cancellation policy. To schedule a massage, call 708/857-2420.
• Personal Training at the Community Pavilion - Meet with a certified Personal Trainer who will design a program to improve your cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance.
