• Preschool Open Houses - The Oak Lawn Park District is hosting two Preschool Open Houses. The first will be on Wednesday, February 9th at the Little White Building, 9514 S. 54th Ave., from 6:30-8pm. The second will be on Thursday, February 10th at the Oak View Center, 4625 W. 110th St. 6:30-8pm. Registration for the 2011/2012 preschool year begins on February 14 for Oak Lawn residents and on February 28th for non-residents. Please bring child's birth certificate. • Dog Park – The New Dog Park located at 99th and Moody will open this spring, but memberships are available now for purchase! Memberships can be purchased at the Oak View Center located at 4625 W. 110th St. and at the Community Pavilion located at 9401 S. • Memorial Bricks – Memorial bricks are available for purchase for the New Dog Park at 99th and Moody. Memorial bricks are $75 each. For more information or to download an order form, visit www.olparks.com.
• Teen Wallyball League - The Oak Lawn Park District is taking team registrations for the Teen Wallyball League. The league is broken down into two age divisions – Jr High and High School. Teams will be made-up of 5 or 6 players. League play will begin on Sunday, February 13 with a scrimmage game to learn the rules and techniques. Games will be held at the Racquet Center (10444 S. Central Ave.). Jr. High teams will play on Sunday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm. High School teams will play on Sunday evenings from 7:30-8:30 pm. Playoffs will be held the final night with a sponsor donating $100 to whatever charity the 1st place team chooses. Team fee is $100. Fee includes a t-shirt for each team member. • Rubber-Stamping Workshop - Learn the easy art of rubber-stamping at the Oak Lawn Park District. The next workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 8 from 7 – 9:30 pm at the Oak View Center (4625 W. 110th St). Participants will complete several projects, including greeting cards using various techniques. Please bring your own colored pencils and scissors. Workshops are open to those ages 18 and up. • Junior Chefs - Oak Lawn Park District is offering a cooking and etiquette class for children ages 5 – 14. Junior Chefs will run Wednesday, February 9 through March 16. Classes will be held at the Oak View Center (4625 W. 110th St.) from 3:45 - 5:15 pm. A different dish will be prepared each week. Each participant will receive a chef’s hat. • Skate with Your Valentine Family Event – Join the Oak Lawn Park District on Sunday, February 13 for the annual Valentine’s Day Family Open Skate Event at the Oak Lawn Ice Arena (9320 S. Kenton). A2Z DJ service will provide the music. The open skate is from 1 - 2:30 pm. Admission is $6.00. Skate rental is an additional $3.00 per pair. For more information call 708-857-5173
• Valentine’s Day Comedy Night - The Oak Lawn Park District’s Stony Creek Clubhouse is hosting a 21 and over Comedy Night on Valentine’s Day, Monday, February 14, 2011. Doors will open at 6:30 pm with dinner being served from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. The entertainment will begin at 7:30 pm. Admission for the show is $10 at the door. Dinner is available for an additional $10. • Vince Clark & Friends to Perform at Stony Creek Again – Local Jazz musician Vince Clark will be performing at the Oak Lawn Park District’s Stony Creek Clubhouse (5850 W. 103rd St.) on Saturday, February 19. Performance begins at 7 pm. Vince Clark will perform finger-snapping classic jazz favorites accompanied by several fellow musicians. Admission is $5 at the door. Cash bar. • Oak Lawn Park District Summer Softball - Returning team registration begins February 21, 2011 for the Oak Lawn Park District’s Summer Softball Leagues. Leagues include Men’s 12-in., Women’s 16-in, Co-Rec. 16-in. and Men’s 16-in. All games will be played at Centennial Park, 93rd St. & Oak Park Ave. Games will begin the week of May 1. Fee for each team is $585. Leagues are open to adults 18 and older. New team registration begins March 5. Registration deadline for all teams is April 22. • Spring Gardening Lecture: Composting – The Oak Lawn Park District is hosting the first Spring Gardening Lecture on Monday, February 28 at the Oak View Center, 4625 W. 110th St. The lecture will begin at 6:30 pm. The topic of this lecture is composting. Learn about the age-old gardening practice that serves many functions in the garden. Fee is $5. Pre-registration is required. • Trip: SLEUTH - On Wednesday, March 2 the Oak Lawn Park District is hosting a trip to see SLEUTH in Munster, Indiana. Enjoy lunch and this delightful whodunnit. The Motor coach will depart the Oak View Center at 11 am and return at 5 pm. Fee is $70 for Oak Lawn residents and $80 for non-residents. • Trip: Chicagoland Flower and Garden Show and Spirit of Chicago Lunch & Cruise – The Oak Lawn Park District is offering a trip to the Chicagoland Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier on Thursday, March 10. The day will start out with a two-hour cruise on Lake Michigan aboard the Spirit of Chicago which includes an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet. During the cruise there will be a Professional Garden Demonstration. Following the cruise we will attend the Flower and Garden Show. The motorcoach bus will depart the Oak View Center, 4625 W. 110th St., at 10:30 am and return at 6 pm. Fee for this trip is $70 for Oak Lawn residents and $80 non-residents. • Golf Simulators – Golf simulators will be available at Stony Creek Golf Course this winter. It is also a great opportunity to play some famous courses and help keep your swing in shape. • Before & After School With FLASH – FLASH, Fun & Learning After School Hours - Register now for the 2010/2011 school year. The Oak Lawn Park District has partnered up with School District 123 for the 2nd year and is expanding to all 5 elementary schools, Covington, Hannum, Hometown, Kolmar, & Sward. The park district has also partnered up with School District 122 and their 4 elementary schools, Columbus Manor, Harnew, Kolb, & Lieb to provide FLASH for the 2010/2011 school year. • Community Pavilion Main Arena Rental - Attention high schools, colleges and businesses: Have your special event with us! The Oak Lawn Park District’s Community Pavilion is available for rentals. The arena measures 28,000 sq. ft. and can seat up to 1,000 people at tables and chairs, or 3,500 with chairs only. Reservations must be made at least six months in advance with 50% down. Payment is non-refundable after 90 days. Contact the assistant manager at (708) 857-2420 or pavilion@olparks.com.
• Indoor Playground at the Community Pavilion - The indoor playground is now available for parties: Playground rental is $45 per hour with a max of 25 children. Rental includes tables and chairs. Renter is responsible for all party decorations and refreshments (no confetti please). Add a basketball court for $20 per hour for residents and $40 per hour for non-residents. • Massage Therapy at the Community Pavilion - Sandra Coffey is available by appointment only. Massage therapy is used to reduce stress, increase circulation and detoxify overexerted muscles. • Parent Forum & Support Group for Parents of Children with Disabilities – The Oak Lawn Park District’s Special Recreation Department offers a monthly Parent Forum & Support Group for Parents of Children with Disabilities the third Thursday of every month at the Oak View Center, 4625 W. 110th St., beginning at 7 pm. Come out once a month to discuss, review, and suggest new ideas or program strategies. Also, meet other parents of children with disabilities.
